I have the honour to acknowledge with thanks the re-

ceipt of your despatch No.36 of the 27th instant, giving

covor to certain correspondence on the subject of co-

operation in police matters between the Government of

Hongkong and the Provincial Authorities.

I presume that the Intendant of Police has been

given clearly to understand that Chinese detectives

travelling on the river steamers must on no account attempt

to effect, arrests on hoard or on the Canton wharvos which

are British property.
